ASP International News (09/2006)

TAJ TAKES ON TRESTLES (AND THE TOP 45)
The Australian superfreak himself, Taj Burrow, has arrived in San Clemente for the upcoming Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles and early reports hint that the aerial maestro has been in devastating form during pre-event free surfs. In between testing out new equipment, Burrow has been preparing to capitalize on his best world title run in years. Although the current world No. 2 has long been considered a world title contender, several have speculated that the 27-year old had missed his window of opportunity. However, Taj’s blistering form in ’06 has put all nay-sayers to rest and he presently sits a mere 427 points behind current leader Kelly Slater. Watch him kick off his Boost Mobile Pro campaign tomorrow against Cory Lopez and Rob Machado in Heat 10 of Round 1.

ADRIAN BUCHAN'S DREAM TOUR DEBUT
With rookies comprising a quarter of this year's Foster's ASP Men's World Tour roster, it's easy to overlook the fact that there's one we haven't heard from yet - Adrian Buchan. After overcoming an ankle injury sustained before the season opener on the Gold Coast, Buchan has been MIA from the first six events of the 2006 tour. Tomorrow, 'ACE' will suit up with the big boys for the first time this year. Will all eyes be on the young Aussie when he paddles out into his Round 1 heat against Damien Hobgood and Trent Munro at the Boost Mobile Pro tomorrow? Buchan Oath they will!

WHY YOU SHOULD MARRY YOUR SHAPER - A CHELSEA GEORGESON STORY
Try this scenario on for size: Girl proves to the world that she is the best female surfer on the planet. Girl wins ASP Women's World Title. Girl surfs well the first half of her defending world champion season but needs to win events if she wants to keep her crown. Girl says, 'I guess I'd better win the next event in France.' Girl loses her entire quiver when her board bag disappears on her way to said event. Girl realizes she married her shaper and he can shape her a new board. Girl has husband shape her a board and wins event keeping her world title dream alive. Lucky girl.

MICK CAMPBELL - THE COMEBACK KING
Following back-to-back WQS victories in France, former world runner-up mighty Mick Campbell has secured his spot on the Foster's ASP Men's World Tour for 2007. After a brief hiatus from elite tour competition, this season has witnessed the powerful goofy-footer back on a global qualifying assault reinstating his reputation as one of the most dangerous competitors in the world. The Top 45 will surely be experiencing an increase in sleepless nights from here on out.

AND THE AWARDS GOES TO...

The 2006 Surfer Poll and Video Awards will go down tomorrow night at The Grove in Anaheim. This gala event will see the world’s best slip into their penguin suits to see who the public thinks wields his or her equipment the best. Last year saw Kelly Slater dethrone Andy Irons for the No. 1 spot and we’ll see the battle rage on once more this year.
