WHERE'S THAT SLATER DUDE?
Kelly Slater is not competing in the Nova Schin Festival currently underway in Imbituba, Brazil.
Why you ask? Well let's put it this way... if you were so science-savvy that your chemistry professor gave you the final exam during mid-terms and you aced it, would you keep going to class?
Exactly.
So congrats to Kelly for killing it and wrapping up World Title No. 8 so early and here's to the guys still studying for their Hawaiian finals in Brazil.
P.S. We have a feeling Slater will show up at Pipe for some extra credit.
Slater ain't there, but the rest of the boys are! Watch Brazil...
MARTINEZ – THE ROOKIE MONSTER
After nine of 11 events on the 2006 Foster’s ASP World Tour, only two of the Top 45 can lay
claim to two event wins this year. The first, surprise, surprise, is our recently-crowned eight-time World Champ Kelly Slater. Slater’s one, two punch at the beginning of the season saw him sweep Australia with wins at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast followed by the Rip Curl Pro at Bells.
The second is the muy caliente Bobby Martinez. Martinez, who blew everyone’s mind with a rookie-season victory at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in May, before lending further credence to his impending dominance with a second win at the Billabong Pro Mundaka last month. And yes, he beat Slater in the final.
“This year I came in just happy to be here,” Bobby has said. “After struggling on the ’QS for so long and to finally get here… well, I just wanted to give it my all at every contest and try to requalify. So to win two events, wow, it’s just crazy for me.”
GILMORE – THE GROM THAT’LL SCHOOL YOU
Gromette: generally defined as a young surfer, and in this case, one of a female variety. Often used as a taunting term of endearment by elders, and if the ‘grom’ rips, acknowledged as a likely contributor to the future of the sport.
Well a certain 6’0 female grom whose style is likened to Mick Fanning’s more than any surfer of the male variety, is ready to contribute.
Stephanie Gilmore may not be on tour yet (she’s only 18!) but she’s already won two ASP Women’s World Tour events. She also slipped US$20,000, (the biggest prize check ever awarded in women's surfing) into her piggybank courtesy of her Havaianas Beachley Classic win in early October.
Not only is Steph the first person to ever win two World Tour events as a wildcard (her first was the '05 Roxy Pro Gold Coast) she also looks like she’s qualified for the big leagues next year! The rest of the field best beware – there’s gonna be a new ‘grom’ on the block and the tour kicks off in her backyard.
WATCH OUT, THAT GIRL'S LAYNE -GEROUS
Layne Beachley, the only surfer with six consecutive world titles to her name, is back on top.
The current world No. 1 overtook Mel Redman-Carr by finishing runner-up at her signature event, the Havaianas Beachley Classic. She's mentioned in the past that she 'Wanted to match Slater's 7 world titles record but if he won 8 he could have it.' Sounds sorta like Slater's 'I'm not sure whether I'll compete full time in '06.' There's no keeping a good champ down, and Ms. Beachley's no exception.
