Coxos, Ericeira, Portugal (38°58´60N,9°25´OW)

Where: Ericeira, Portugal.

What is it: Point break right. Long, fast and furious, the wave is no kindergarten: heavy sections can turn the barrel of your life into a nasty beating. Lots of water running along the rocks makes the getting in/out of the water a game of patience and know-how. Breaks at almost any size and it can reach the 10ft mark, although best days happen at sizes between 5 to 8ft.

Winds: E is straight offshore but also good with light SE or NE.

Water Temperature: 12°C (January) - 18°C (October).

Season: Autumn/Winter are the best, especially autumn when you can score glassy days and warm water. Winter early morning sessions can be chilly, but the sun will warm up the place around mid morning.

What board to bring: 6´0" to 6´8". Don´t really need bigger than that because the wave can be really fast and hollow, especially on west swells.

Swell window: Not too big, not too small, the wave awakens even on a small west swell, although best conditions happen with decent sized north to northwest swells.

Where to stay: You can choose between the camp site (close to some of the best spots), small hotels or moderately priced apartments. Big price variation between high and low season.

Nearest Airport: Portela, Lisboa. Main international airport in Portugal. 50km, 40 minute drive to Ericeira.

Nightlife: In the summer there´s some partying going on - especially last week of August (WQS 6*) - but for the rest of the year it´s worth the 30 minute drive to Lisbon to check out the nightlife.

ASP International News (06/2007)

ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PENGUINS?
Reigning and eight-time Foster’s ASP World Champ Kelly Slater and former World Runner-Up Rob Machado made a splash of a different kind this weekend with the premiere of their computer-animated penguin flick, Surf’s Up. The movie sees the aviary versions of Kelly and Rob team up with infamous mic-jockey Sal Masakela to cover the Big Zeke Memorial Classic in which Antarctic up-and-comer Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LeBeouf) partners with Wisconsin-bred Chicken Joe (Napoleon Dynamite’s Jonathan Heder) against reigning champ and lineup heavy Tank (Diedrich Bader). A slew of other stars come to play including Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel and James Woods. Of course, the movie isn’t Hollywood’s first attempt to capture the culture of surfing, but rave reviews from both inside and outside the industry are touting Surf’s Up as one of the most accurate depictions to date (interesting when considered that the characters are CGI penguins). The film finished a respectable fourth in the opening weekend box office, taking in an impressive $18 million. Check out the trailer at… http://www.surfsup.com/

AI ENGAGEDCongratulations Andy and Lyndie!
Hawaiian heavy-hitter and former three-time Foster’s ASP World Champion Andy Irons is officially off the market, having popped to question to long-time girlfriend Lyndie while on vacation in Tavarua last week. Now plug your ears for a moment as females around the globe let out a collective wail of sadness and envy. The Hawaiian powerhouse was in good company with his brother Bruce and friend/mentor Kai Garcia there to celebrate. Thankfully, the fine journalists at Transworld Surf were on hand as well with Chris Cote and Brian Bielmann to capture all the action as it went down. PERFECTION IN THE MALDIVES
Brazilian Heitor Alves took down former elite tour campaigner Jarrad Howse to scalp the ASP WQS 5-Star PRIME SriLankan Airlines Pro at Pasta Point in the Maldives last Friday in dreamlike conditions. Clean 3 to 5 foot (1-1.5 metre) lefthanders peeled down Pasta Point all week seeing 192 of the world’s top competitors continue their respective campaigns towards the 2008 Foster’s ASP World Tour. When the dust had settled, Alves took down the trophy and points while South Africa’s Jordy Smith moved into a commanding lead on the WQS ratings. Howse also gained a substantial jump, moving into 4th on the ratings heading into the next event, the ASP WQS 6-Star Mr. Price Pro at Durban in South Africa. EL RIPPY LLAMA AWAITS THE ASP FOSTER'S 45
Little over a week remains before the world’s best surfers descend on the small Chilean town of Arica for the Rip Curl Pro Search Chile event, Stop No. 4 on the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour, running June 20 – July 1, 2007. The Search’s “roving” license allows the venue to change from year to year and this season’s reputed heavy-water locale has been keeping several members of the ASP Foster’s 45 awake at night. While little is known about the spot, El Rippy Llama (the official mascot of the Rip Curl Pro Search Chile) has released a short teaser video online. And that’s not all – it seems as though Señor Rippy has been spending quite a lot of time on the web lately, even creating his own Myspace page. Be sure to log onto ASP International’s Myspace page to link up...

KEALA FROM CINCINNATI
Former ASP World Runner-Up and Teahupoo charger Keala Kennelly further entrenched surfing into mainstream American culture this weekend with the premiere of her HBO surf-oriented series John from Cincinnati, which aired after the final episode of The Sopranos. The series comes from acclaimed television creator David Milch (Deadwood) as well as surf noir specialist Kem Nunn (Tapping the Source, Dogs of Winter) and follows the struggles of Imperial Beach surfing dynasty, the Yost Family. The Yosts are comprised of three generations of surfing standouts: Mitch (played by Bruce Greenwood) is a Southern California surf pioneer and legend whose son Butch (Brian Van Holt) redefined modern surfing a la Christian Fletcher/Martin Potter, but now battles a heroine addiction; Butchie’s prodigious son Shaun (Greyson Fletcher) is trying to find his place in the surfing world, yet is haunted by his family’s sordid history. The series deviates from the world of “Beach Blanket Bingo” when the title character John (Austin Nichols) arrives and is taken in by the quirky family, but not before some odd happening occur. Miss Kennelly takes on the role of Kai, a surf shop employee that holds things down while the chaotic Yosts sort out a family of incredibly talented, if not sensibly bankrupt, surfers.
