With the Air Tahiti Nui VZ Trials already going off in epic 8- to 12-ft conditions last week, the real deal gets underway from May 8-18 for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, with the contest generally held on the four best days of surf during that window. The ASP WQS 6.0 Lowers Pro is preparing to kick off at the world-famous Lower Trestles, and the possibility of tearing into some rippable cobblestone walls has attracted some of the biggest names in surfing. After a slow start in Scotland, the ASP WQS 6-Star Prim O’Neill Highland Open pres. by Swatch is getting underway and the points are there for the taking. Next week we should have some big changes on the ASP WQS ratings with the completion of the O’Neill Highland Open as well as the ASP WQS 4-Star 6.0 Lowers Pro in California. The Drug Aware Pro presented by O’Neill for both men and women has been completed at Margaret River in West Australia with congratulations going to Tom Whitaker (AUS) and Paige Hareb (NZL) on their great wins in surf ranging from 3 feet to 12 feet over the week.

The world’s best surfers are gearing up for the first specialty event of the 2008 ASP season, the Boost Mobile Surf Sho presented by Nokia on Australia’s Gold Coast. The specialty event format pits some of the finest aerialists in the world against one another in a shootout of epic proportions. Pushing the envelope of competitive surfing, the 2008 Boost Mobile Surf Sho pres. by Nokia will see if defending champ and current ASP World No. 4 Taj Burrow (AUS) can stave off the onslaught from his fellow Dream Tour campaigners and a few other aerial acrobats.

Fish Tales
For those who were tuning in last week to the Drug Aware Pro pres. by O’Neill, you would have seen the surfers concerned with more than the massive swell and fierce competition on Wednesday. ASP Top 17 member Amee Donohoe (AUS) caught glimpse of what many are calling a massive (4 metre) White Pointer in the lineup during her heat, causing event organizers to postpone competition temporarily. Although the men would eventually brave the lineup only a short while later, the Noah sighting had everyone talking for days afterwards.
